After over 30 years of wrestling with this dilemma, here's my advice:

Think simple.

Italian women dress stylishly without a lot of fuss. Color coordinate, be neat, and all shall be well. Also, remember that the days of porters scurrying to help travelers carry their luggage are long gone, so over packing will end up being a drag on your trip. You can always hand wash, or get to a laundry or dry cleaner while you're there. Plus, what's the hardship in having to buy extra clothes or shoes in Italy?

Don't pack:

- Your hairdryer: Even budget hotels have them.

- Spike heels: They get stuck in the cobblestones.

- Shorts: You'll feel odd unless you're biking or on a beach.

- Sneakers: Meaning your gym shoes or white sneakers. That said comfortable shoes are very important, as you'll be doing lots of walking. Check out Ecco or Arches for good styles. Rubber soles are best for hill towns, where leather slips on the slopes.

Do pack:

- An umbrella: To always carry with you on "iffy" weather days. You'll regret having to buy one from eager street vendors who jack up the price the moment the sky opens.

- Tissues: To double as toilet paper. There will inevitably be places that are lacking.

- Band Aids: In case of foot blisters.

- Travel-sized toiletries: This is the stuff that can really add weight, so bring only what you need. Hotels generally supply shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion.

- A lightweight duffel bag: To fill with souvenirs for your return trip.

- A copy of your passport, credit card numbers, and toll-free numbers to call in case of credit card loss. Give another copy and your itinerary to someone who can easily be reached, so they can be sent to you if necessary. Before you go, call your bank and credit card companies to give them a heads up, as in these days of high security, they may block your card if they aren't forewarned about your foreign spending.

The scenery of Austria is ever so familiar to them and yet they have never taken the stunning journey that is the Ring of Kerry or the incredible drive through Connemara. They rave about Lake Garda in Italy but have never seen the Lakes of Killarney. They toured the Rhine on a cruiser but never ventured as far as the Shannon River and cruise through beautiful Lough Ree or Lough Derg down to the chic ambience that is the town of Killaloe in Clare. They know the Swiss Alps and the Pyrenees but have never experienced the exhilaration of a walk along the wonderful Wicklow Way.

Out of the desperate doom and gloom that exists in Ireland comes a chance for people to explore their own country and in doing so, perhaps kick start a new prosperous era in the tourist industry that is so badly needed. It is now up to that industry to play its part in taking advantage of this silver lining around this particular cloud by offering value that will open the eyes of the staycationers

All travelers must be careful when traveling; however women should adhere to the following advice. In today's society, Women do not want to rely on assistance from people that they are unfamiliar with. They want to appear confident while traveling.

Before leaving your home, be sure you can manage your luggage on your own. This means your luggage is in good shape, can easily roll on wheels, you can lift it on and off of the bed (to mimic the luggage carousel at the airport) and is the weight limit for your airline rules. You do not want to be stuck taking clothing out of your suitcase in a busy airport check in because the weight limit is not too high, nor do you need a zipper that breaks.

Additionally, it is advisable that you bring only one over sized bag/purse onto the plane with your ticket, a light jacket, wallet, snacks and any additional carry on items in there. It is not a good idea to juggle too many "carry ons"- one bag is easier. You could even put a mini laptop into this carry on as well. If the laptop is out of it's protective sleeve, it doesn't even have to come out of the over sized carry on bag at the x-ray machine. One has found that having to remove shoes, cell phone etc at the security checks, keeping an eye on one bag going through the conveyor belt is easier that a purse and multiple" carry ons". Remember- No one else will be with you to be sure that others do not accidentally take your items.

Bringing food onto an airplane is necessary these days- unless you want to be at the mercy of the airline and what they are offering. Women should plan early and pack foods at home which are light with digestion. A plain bagel, bottled water, pretzels and mints, do not give you an upset stomach during turbulence-nor make me feel hungry later on. You don't want to be going to the restroom on the plane, and worried about leaving your articles at your seat. Drinking alcohol is also not a wise idea. With bathroom trips and feeling light headed- it doesn't add up to safe travel.
